Q: How did you come up with your story?
I saw a call for fantasy/paranormal books based loosely on old musicals. One of my favorite movies is VICTOR/VICTORIA. I always adored the idea of the woman pretending to be a man pretending to be a woman. The idea was born…a race of mages, almost all of them male, but all the male mages are very effeminate in appearance: no facial hair, slight of build, etc. When a female mage comes along, a corrupt king tries to force her to marry his heir to keep the throne in the family. She can’t hide that she’s a mage, so the obvious answer is to hide that she’s female and pretend to be a male mage. The series was born that simply.
Q: Who or what inspired you to become a writer?
I’ve been a writer since before I can remember. The earliest writings I have saved of mine are from when I was seven. My teachers urged me (forced me, sometimes) to start entering contests for teen authors when I was 11. And I won…against kids 2-7 years older than I was. I’ve always been an avid reader, and my father and aunt read to me constantly, so they might just be my earliest inspirations.
Q: If you weren’t a writer, what would you be? Why?
My degrees are in accounting and computer programming, but I use them sparingly and have since my oldest child was born. At that point, I got into special needs child care and teaching. To be fair, I was working as a teacher in high school and college (student teaching classes for teachers and tutoring). If I wasn’t writing, I would probably want to run a writing school for kids up to college age.
Q: Favorite genres to read?
GLBT, Humor, Mystery, Thriller, Suspense, Noir, Paranormal, Romance, Sci Fi/Fantasy, YA, True Crime, Poetry.
Q: What are your pet peeves?
I really dislike people that are either intentionally rude and self-centered, the the point that they endanger others or choose to be intentionally hurtful. That would include people that play with their cell phones while driving, people that do things that are intentionally hurtful to others that have never done them wrong, and so forth. I’m a Libra, so I guess I just like equity and balance in life. I don’t like to see injustice.
Q: What is something most people don’t know about you?
I may look confident in a crowd, but I hate standing or walking in crowds of people and have a huge personal space bubble. I am more comfortable giving a speech in front of two hundred people that are not crushed in around me than with shaking hands with a half dozen in close quarters. I do most of my Christmas shopping online to avoid the crush of crowds in stores. If a local store has an online site, I will even buy their wares online rather than go into a crowded store.
Q: Where else can we find you, other titles, or anything else you’d like to share?
Since I have more than 80 contracted books and stories and another 80+ WIP in 21 series worlds and stand-alones, you’d definitely want to check out my site for more information.
Thanks for having me!
