Q: How did you come up with your story?
My story arose from a combination of impulses. First, and most importantly, I have a brother, Ciaran, with cerebral palsy. He grew up in the 70,s in Ireland, and has been a pioneer and an inspiration to other disabled people. He educated himself when everyone said it would be impossible, and he now lives in an appartment as an independent adult and works at a radio station planning playlists.
So, my motivation for the book was my love and admiration for him. Secondly, I love writing about the people and places of Ireland. Though I am from Irish parents I grew up in England and only moved to the south of Ireland as a teenager. At 26 I moved to the Netherlands. So, I write about the South of Ireland to remind me of how special the people and places there truly are. Thirdly, social. issues will always fascinate me, so those will always have a place in anything I write.
Q: Who or what inspired you to become a writer?
I thought to myself, if Maeve Binchy and Frank McCourt can do it, so can I. But I think it was Isabelle Allende and Gabriel Garcia Marquez that challenged me to go deeper, and find the magic under the surface.
Q: If you weren’t a writer, what would you be? Why?
Besides being a writer, I am also a painter, and play the piano. If I did not concentrate on writing I think I would combine my talents and run creative workshops for anyone who wants to live a more authentic life. If fact, I think I might just do that anyway!!!!
